Peiris the Lankan hope in swimming

Taekwondo leads the way

After the first official day’s proceedings, Sri Lanka was lying at third place with 3 gold, 7 Silver and 10 bronze thanks at the 13th SA Games here at Kathmandu today.

The ahead of the Lankans surprising were the hosts Nepal and giants India. Nepal made use of the familiar home conditions finish with eleven gold, two silver and six bronze medals while India’s tally read as 3 gold, 8 silver 3 bronze.

However Sri Lanka’s impressive performance was a result of a gutsy performance by the Taekwondo players who brought the bulk of the medals haul through a superb team performance.

M.P.D. Ranuka raked in Sri Lanka’s first gold sparking off an arguably the biggest haul of medal off a single discipline (Poomse) in a day at a Lankan international sports history. The rest of the Taekwondo gang to come up with very impressive performances.

Ranuka did not stop at one.  A while after his first;  he paired off with Isuri Mendis to take Sri Lanka’s second gold medal in the 17-23 Pairs Poomse event. The third Lankan gold was won by the threesome of Krishantha Weerasinghe, Dinesh Viranga and Isuru perera.

The Silver medals were in the 24-25 Poomse Team event, 17-23 team Poomse and the over 29 Poomse Individual event.

The event where the Lankans impressed today was Karate where they won two silver in Team Kata and 50kg Kumithe by Dinusha Kumarai.

Prior to the sport aspect; six students who are sitting the Ordinary Level Examinations were the given the opportunity courtesy the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, the Examinations Department and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Nepal, as the students are a part of the ongoing SAG.
