About Sri Lanka Athletics
Over 150 schools are expected to participate in Sri Lanka’s most significant event in school sport’s calendar, organised by the Ministry of Education and supported by the Sri Lanka School Athletic Association and the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka. This annual event showcases the spirit of the Athletics’ World Plan through its commitment to school and youth development.
More than 2500 young athletes are expected to gather in Sri Lanka’s Sugathadasa Stadium for yet another edition of the most successful sport event in the country, the Relay Carnival.
Boys and girls from 12 to 20 year-olds will display their athletics skills in this year’s Relay Carnival, an event which represents an opportunity for youngsters to showcase their value and continue evolving in the sports. In addition to the competition’s main relay, spectators will also have a glimpse on this generation’s performance in events such as decathlon and heptathlon.
As result of this partnership between local government and athletics, the Relay Carnival has become a major national event in Sri Lanka and provides youngsters with the opportunity to develop their abilities and raise the national level of the sport. It integrates athletics to school activities, popularising the sport among participants and spectators across different ages and gender.
This three-day long competition illustrates the importance of interacting with branches of government in order to establish the sport in the local educational system. The AASL and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education have done an incredible job in consolidating the Relay Carnival to the country’s sports event calendar.
